I have no wood in my driveway expansion joints, does it need to be replaced? The expansion joint was originally placed to allow space for the concrete to expand and contract without breaking or pressuring each other. joints in pavement should be sealed with something elastic to prevent water/ice/subsoil saturation/etc. If you choose to put nothing in the joint then eventually your driveway foundation will wash away, leaving it uneven or cracked.

Over the course of a day, temperature changes cause slabs to contract and expand. This movement allows the joints to open more, |
